Grow Your Own 2017 – Campaign Q&As

The campaign live: 27/02/17 to 06/04/17

How do I get hold of some Heinz seeds?
You can request your Heinz seeds at the Heinz Tomato Ketchup Grow Your Own microsite by completing your personal details. The first 2,000 entries each day will get sent a packet of free seeds. If the maximum amount of seeds of that day are already given away, you are able try again the day after. We will be giving away seeds during February, March and April only, because they need to be sown in this time to grow into strong tomato plants.

How do I plant and grow my seeds?
If you go to our “Growing Guide” page, you will find all the information you need for successfully sowing and growing your seeds, from sowing your seeds to the moment of picking the fruits of your labour.

What is the best time to start planting my seeds?
Plant your Heinz seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before you plan to transfer them outdoors as seedlings. Your seedlings need to be protected from frosts and cold weather, so plant your seedlings outdoors around 2 weeks following the last frost date of your area.

Why do you want us to grow our own tomatoes?
We are great advocates of growing fresh tomatoes – after all, Heinz Tomato Ketchup is bursting full of tasty Heinz tomatoes! Therefore, we want to help our fans get involved in growing tomatoes too.

I don’t have a garden. Can I still participate in the Grow Your Own campaign?
Definitely! You always start planting your tomato seeds indoor, because they need to develop a good root system. When the seedlings are 3 to 4 inches (…cm) tall, they are ready to move into the garden. Plant your seedlings outdoors around 2 weeks after the last frost date. If you don’t have a garden, you can move them to your balcony. If you also don’t have a balcony, it’s not a problem to continue growing them inside but you should take some additional care. Make sure your seedlings are placed into a good light source, such as a sunny windowsill, and water them regularly.

Could my child also participate in the campaign?
Grow Your Own is the perfect campaign for a family. Your child will love to help with sowing the seeds and taking care of your young tomato plant as it grows. We advise you to support your child though, to make sure the seedlings will be watered regularly and moved to a bigger pot when needed.

How can I share my tomato growing progress?
We’d love to see how you are getting on with your tomato growing, make sure you post your photos on the Heinz Tomato Ketchup Facebook timeline!

What makes Heinz Tomatoes different?
Since 1933, Heinz has been dedicated to developing the best seeds for growing the naturally thicker, delicious tomatoes that go into our ketchup. We work with farmers that we know and trust to grow full, tasty and incredibly rich tomatoes giving you the perfect thick tomato ketchup. As part of that tomato growing programme, we track our tomatoes from seed to plate because we think you should know where your ketchup comes from and that it is of the highest quality.

What is Heinz’ process of growing the best Tomatoes?
We track our tomatoes from seed to plate because we think you should know exactly where your ketchup comes from and to ensure that it is of the highest quality. The program starts by producing the seeds which are then quality tested to ensure they are the highest quality, the seeds are then planted and grown by our farmers who we assist to ensure the delivery of perfectly ripened tomatoes at the height of harvest whilst utilising sustainable practices. The tomatoes once grown are then ready to be made into Heinz ketchup!

Where are the seeds you send us from?
We have obtained the tomato seeds for you from Heinz Seed Company who supply the seeds for all the tomatoes that go into our Heinz Tomato Ketchup.
